If something hurts physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise, I have found if I shift my focus away from it, it hurts less.

For example, say I am angry at myself for messing up at work. Going for a walk, watching a show I am addicted to, or talking with a loved one regularly makes the upset matter less.

This does not work for everything, and some pains are best dealt with in therapy. For many issues though, just removing my attention can change everything.
