Post 102: Practiced Relaxation

A useful activity is putting my focus into any part of me that is tense. An example is I am out for a walk, and I focus on standing up straight and then actively searching through my body for areas of stress or tightness. I then rest my attention there and focus on relaxing. Once the area I am attentive to eases up, I move on to the next area of strain.

I find this useful for a few reasons:

1.       I am taken out of my thoughts and put into my direct experience. If I find myself stuck in a negative thought pattern, this is very helpful. I have something else to absorb my attention.

2.       Over time I am teaching my body to be as relaxed as possible. If you have ever had back pain, or any type of issues related to tension, I don’t have to tell you how beneficial this is.

3.       I am doing a training exercise around directing my focus. The more I build this muscle, the easier it becomes when I find myself fixated on something that is stressing me out.
