A Little Happiness Just for You

Post 8: The Practice

Here is how I build the happiness muscle.

First, I need to be able to notice when I am stuck in thoughts or feelings that make me feel bad. Noticing is so important. Without the ability to notice I will never have the chance to practice the other pieces of the skill.

Then I need to do the internal work to choose a different focus. Maybe it is looking for what is good whenever I start to complain, or looking for what will help whenever I start to criticize.

The practice than becomes I am repeatedly catching myself having those bad habitual thoughts or feelings over time. Then I am redirecting my focus to the new ones I have selected. Through sustained practice I will destroy the old connections and build new associations which will then become my new unconscious patterns I consciously chose.

Over time, I can write my preferential inclinations into being my normal view of the world.
