I had a client ask me once, “Why don’t you get angry?” She was very upset and felt like she was being screwed with, which she was.
My response was, “Because I have never found it to help.”
I think in the moment it seems like anger helps because it feels like it gives me power. I believe I am doing something. I can retaliate at whomever or whatever is making me angry.
Looking back though, anger has only ever made things worse. I say something I later regret. I do something I later am ashamed of. I act in a way that makes me embarrassed when I look back on it.
So, in the moment, when I see anger coming, I just remember that it doesn’t help. In fact, it hurts. I can simply say, “No, thank you. I can find a better way to handle this.” The more often I do, the less likely it is to come around. The less attention I give it, the less it wants to hang out with me.
For me, if I don’t let anger take me over, it stops spending time on trying to. Anger is a dick.
