Post 24: Fabricated Goals

I found I was constantly upset because I did not hit a goal that I set for myself. I wanted to lose five pounds and I lost three. I aimed to make $50,000 and I made $45,000. I was hoping to ride for 20 miles, and I only made it 15.

The thought I had was that I just made these goals up. No one gave them to me. I didn’t have a concrete reason for any of these outcomes other than I like multiples of five. I made them all up myself. Then I got angry at myself for not hitting something I pulled out of my own butt.

When I look at it though, I lost three pounds, made $45,000, and rode my bike for 15 miles. If I had set these goals I would be extremely happy with myself. Or more likely, I would chastise myself for setting my standards too low.

I made it all up. Why am I getting so angry at myself for not adhering to illusions?
