When I open myself to uncomfortable situations, I grow my level of relaxation within them. For example, I have always liked performing in front of others. Even with that natural inclination, I had growing pains.
Once, I went in to talk with some talent scouts. They asked me to read a monologue for them. I became so nervous that I was unable to speak, I broke out in sweats, and I started laughing uncontrollably. I went home feeling like a failure.
I kept putting myself in front of audiences though. Now I have spoken in front of hundreds of people. I have even been a keynote speaker where I was the only person being looked at by everyone in the room.
I had the opportunity to give in to my phobia of messing up while presenting. Instead, I ignored my doubts and leaned into it. By repeatedly bringing to light the situation I thought was generating my dread, I found out the alarm was all in my mind.
