An interesting experience I have found is the power of putting my focus where pain is. Physical pain. Emotional pain. Mental anguish.
Doing this could happen a couple of different ways.
1. Simply pay attention to it. Don’t try and push it away. Don’t avoid it. Don’t ignore it. Instead, I take as much of my focus as possible and just let it sit on the feeling I see as bad, and watch what happens. Allow it to be and witness what occurs.
2. Sometimes a mental or emotional pain shows up in my physical body. My anxiety tends to show up in my back and shoulders, as a headache, or some delightful combination of the two. If I put my attention on the physical manifestation instead of the mental or emotional, that can be easier.
What I have found to be very interesting is when I attempt to push these pains away, to deal with them later, ignore them, or simply run away from them, they stay with me. It seems like pushing them away actually makes me hold on to them. I know where they are. I can keep track of them so they can’t hurt me as much. Only, they keep hurting me.
If I instead put my focus on them, watch them, and simply allow them to be, they tend to go away completely.
I am not saying you can fix a broken bone by focusing on the pain. I am saying you might be able to fix a broken ego by simply noticing it has been hurt, and allowing that hurt to exist. Accepting that someone hurt you seems to make the pain of that hurt fade away. It was seen. It was heard. It is no longer necessary.
