A normal response to feeling something I deem to be bad is to be mad at myself. I am upset that I am experiencing sadness. I am angry at myself when I feel irate. I am ashamed when I fall into jealousy.
It seems to be that having feelings I don’t like marks me as less than. I don’t know where this judgement came from. Do I have to feel good all the time, no matter what? Maybe I have the ability to feel good, and so feeling bad is a failure on my part?
What is even stranger, is when a friend or family member is having a bad day, I want to help them. I want to give them love and make them feel better. Why is my response for all the people I love to give them more love, yet I berate myself for having the same experiences?
I have focused on catching myself holding this double standard and instead responding the way I would with everyone else I love. Love myself. Help myself. Accept that sometimes I have feelings I don’t like.
