Post 1,261: The Giver
I have found few joys in life greater than finding a random way to help someone else. Let me explain what I mean.
I am going through my day, and I come across an idea, experience, or item I know a good friend or loved one would enjoy. I was not looking for it. I am not even thinking about that other person. It just clicks in my head, “Oh wait, Jane would love this!” And then I go about figuring out how to get it for them.
When I am able to succeed, the other person gets a surprising moment of being seen. Not only did I know they would like it, I went out of my way to get it for them. I get to show them they matter to me at a deep level. Not only do I know them, not only do the matter to me; their joy matters to me. I cannot express enough how good giving that to someone can make the giver feel.
