Post 1,056: A Calming Presence
Here is one way I have found to be very effective when dealing with someone in front of me who is very upset. This could be a child, friend, coworker, or anyone. I stay with them and focus on breathing, so I can be present. I can focus on being there for them, and waiting for them to calm down. The quicker I can get into this mindset, the faster the other person shifts out of their troubled state.
This is much better than what I used to do, which was focusing on how they were wrong, or stupid, or a jerk. That response usually made everyone escalate into worse and worse situations.
This idea is also true when dealing with myself.
