I have been fasting for a few years now. I started because many of the men in my family have died from cancer, and what I have read and listened to tell me fasting seems to have some cancer prevention benefits.
It has helped me see the power of lack as well. Here are a couple of ways it does that.
I usually do a two or three day fast. In that time, my sense of smell heightens. In itself, this is an interesting experience. Typically, I have a terrible ability to detect scents. Fasting gives me the ability to experience a very different world from the one I am used to.
Also, doing a fast for a couple of days shows me I not only survive without food for a time, I actually thrive. I have energy. I get so much done without the need to stop and eat, or go somewhere to get ingredients to make a meal. And, when I am done with the fast, I have more willpower to not get that bag of chips from the gas station. Because I am not actually that hungry. And gas station chips are not really giving me the food I need.
There is power and beauty in discomfort.
