Post 78: Think Out Loud

Here is something I have started to intentionally do in front of my children:

When I make a split decision, I then think about it out loud in front of them. Here is an example:

My kids were taking classes at the Playhouse. Next door is a smoothie shop. After class one night near the end of the week, they asked if they could get smoothies. I instantly said, “No.”

I realized I had just jumped to that conclusion, so I analyzed my thought process out loud for my girls.

“Ok. I am saying no because it is almost dinner time. Another reason is I don’t want this to become a habit and for you to constantly be asking for smoothies, or whine the next time we go past a smoothie shop.”

“You both do a good job of eating dinner, and these smoothies are mostly fruit though. And we only have two more days of class so this is not a thing that will happen regularly.”

“Ok, we can go have smoothies.”
