The ability to shift my focus away from fixations has dramatically impacted my life.

By this I mean someone did something that angered me. The longer I spend thinking about what they did, or how terrible it was, or how angry I am, the more I am filled with said anger.

I purposefully shift my attention to something else. At this point, the easiest thing by far to shift to is my breathing. I could also focus on a task, or activity. Going for a walk, bike ride, or hike are some of my favorites. I also like getting out with family and friends. Or just talking to someone. I would even throw in mindless tasks for work. Whatever will do a good job of taking my focus as wholly as possible.

By spending less time dwelling in the anger, I feel better. I mean that mentally, emotionally, and physically. This is something I practice regularly when it is easy, so I am better at it when it is hard.
