Anytime I find I am freaking out about something, I can reset myself by actively working to relax my body. I direct my focus from my mind to my body. Tension in my shoulders, focus on physically relaxing them. I can do this in my stomach, neck, jaw, or anywhere I can feel myself tensing up. Or, I can simply focus on my breath.
This does two powerful things. I am consciously relaxing my body, which is helpful. And I am training myself to reset my brain whenever I find it fixating on something I don’t want it focused on.
