Post 413: Difficult Conversations

Here is a technique I have found to be useful in having tough conversations with someone else. This is for if I am nervous about the dialog, or if I believe the other person is going to find the talk difficult. Two steps:

1.       Report my thoughts and feelings as directly as possible. Specifically say, “I think” or “I feel.”
2.       Then, don’t talk until they do.

This gets the issue out in the open, and it gives both participants more information to deal with the challenge. I need to trust the other person to want to work with me. And if they don’t, I have learned something valuable.
