Post 1,470: Fictitious Fights

October 02, 2026•1 min read

I know someone who is seemingly making up a lot of ideas in their head about me. They reached out to let me know they didn’t want to be a bother to me. The thing is, they are not a bother at all. I don’t believe I have ever said anything about there being an issue between us. And yet, they were so certain they had seen hints and clues, and were so worked up about it, that they wanted to let me know they were removing themselves from the situation. (The, to me, non-existent situation.)

We have two people in the same circumstances telling themselves wildly different versions of what was occurring. We have such incredibly divergent stories that they thought they knew my account was obviously negative about them. However, they couldn’t be further from the truth on my narrative.

This is a great reminder to check in. What if the horrible story I am telling myself could be gotten rid of simply by having a conversation? What if I am missing out on a beautiful life because my brain is lying to me telling me I don’t deserve it, or I am the problem, or the other person doesn’t like me?

Why not check?
