Post 1,430: A Slow Response

August 23, 20261 min read

I used to think I was cool for being fast to react. If I could come up with a witty remark, a comeback, or putdown, I was cool. Because it proved I was smart.

When I look back at that version of me, I think I was just a jerk.

Now, I focus on being slow. When I feel anger, shame, worry, or fear I want to take a breath and come back to me. I want to look at the situation and think about what I really am hoping to get out of it. Most of the time, I want the other person to know I am there for them. I want to help.

It is amazing how much of what I used to believe is the exact opposite of what I now believe. I made that happen by taking my time, and being intentional. A slow response, applied over and over again, gave that to me.
