Post 1,415: A Story Changes

August 08, 20261 min read

My wife and I were getting our home in order for some family who are visiting this weekend, and my youngest was working her hardest to not do housework. I bring this up because it gives me the chance to open up about a change I have made in my story.

Old me would have gotten upset with her, forced her to do something, and spent the night fighting with her and making her angry at me. The funny part is, he would have thought he was doing the “right thing.”

My story now is: I chose to pick up the house. I can invite her to help. However, if she makes a different choice, that is her right.

My main reason for going down this path is because of me. The best way to get me to do as little as possible growing up was to tell me I had to do something. “Because I said so.” was the worst thing anyone could say to me.

The people who just helped, and did so without complaint, or most of the time without even being asked, were the people I noticed though. They were the people I looked up to. They were the people I liked.

To put this idea another way:

Who would you rather be friends with: the people who help, or those who don’t?
