Post 1,146: What Do I Control?

November 12, 20251 min read

I make choices that have negative consequences. There are things I do that simultaneously make me happy and cause me to have bad outcomes. There are things I choose that make me happy and I am unaware of the adverse results, which someone else might be acutely aware of.

It is important to come to realize this. Because, other people do the same things. Someone else might decide to do something even though they know it will have costs. Others are completely unaware of the things they are missing out on from their choices.

This is a useful thought experiment for me, because it helps me worry less about the world. I have control over two things in these situations. I can choose to accept all the consequences I am aware of in my own decisions. And I can choose to help others become aware of their consequences. I can’t do much else.
