Post 1,143: The Deadly Dance

November 09, 20251 min read

Yesterday my oldest daughter had a dance competition that lasted over twelve hours. Let me give a couple of points of background. This is the sole dance competition she goes to all year. She dances for a total of maybe twenty minutes out of those twelve hours. And the only seating for that entire time is bleachers.

Needless to say, I was not looking forward to this. And yet, I told myself my goal was to simply enjoy as much of it as I could.

I did. My daughter had fun hanging with her friends. My wife and younger daughter joined as well. I got to watch people enjoy themselves. I was lucky enough to spend the majority of the day with my family.

Now, I would never choose to sit on bleachers watching a dance competition for twelve hours independent of anything else. However, getting to support my eldest, while hanging with my entire family seems like a great use of time.

Everything depends on how I frame it. The story I tell myself dramatically impacts the life I live.
