
Post 1,098: Simple Misunderstandings
I was out on the boat this week with my brother-in-law when I was retaught a valuable lesson: words are imprecise.
I was in the water getting water skis on, and he was in the boat getting ready to pull me. He looked back and asked if the ladder to get in the boat was in. I said yes, because the ladder was in the boat. He came to put it in the boat, because he was asking if the ladder was in the water.
My misunderstanding one two-letter word completely ruined our interchange. I wonder how often this has happened to me in much more consequential conversations?
